The Invasive Paper Project
Detroitus totems from The More We Get Together
Plywood with soil, trash collected from lots and neighborhoods in Detroit
2015
These sculptural pieces ground the installation that grows over time. They act as core samples of the landscape in the city. As I harvested invasive species, I would uncover more and more trash. Rather than being frustrated by this, I began to see this as part of the landscape, points of contrast within some of the ruin and rubble. Like a contemporary midden, this detritus provides cultural context of what has and what is happening in the city.
